The Urban League offers a variety of accelerated career academies focused on in-demand industries and occupations. In addition to classroom instruction, some academies include internships and hands-on training opportunities. Participants are connected with preferred employer partners and are often quickly hired into good-paying positions. All academies are free to participants.
Start your career in construction! Prepare for 19 different trades, including carpentry, electrical, painting, and more. Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Readiness Training is an apprenticeship readiness program that provides 6 weeks of classroom instruction in the areas of work readiness and preparation for apprenticeship entrance exams. You will receive job coaching and tutoring to make you a strong candidate for jobs in the construction industry.
This academy prepares potential para-educators for success in the classroom that exceed standards for non-certified educators, and can be a pathway to certification that aligns with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) guidelines with the school districts of the greater Madison area. Along with ULGM’s Foundations Work Readiness Academy curriculum, content includes classroom management, conflict resolution, assessment, lesson planning (age/grade appropriate), phonics, environmental education, DPI mandated reporting, working with students with special needs, history of race and educational disparities and WI Act 31, tribal culture, history and treaties.
Train for jobs starting at $15+/hour in customer service and support, reception, call center, order taking, sales, sales support, and more! The Customer Service Academy provides a curriculum designed to make you well-prepared for any customer service position. You will also receive components of ULGM’s Foundations for Work Readiness Academy. You will learn what it is like to work in customer service, how to handle upset customers, manage your time while multi-tasking, serving various customer types and how to provide high-quality customer service. You will also meet with hiring staff from key employers like American Family, Alliant Energy, and BMO Harris Bank. Employer tours and presentations by current customer service experts will prepare you to excel in customer service.
Members complete up to 11 months of work experience at an IT Help Desk or Field Service unit and complete the 2 semester Madison College CompTIA+ Certification Program while receiving career counseling, coaching, resource assistance, and post-employment success follow up. During this academy, participants gain knowledge of teamwork, accountability, time management, conflict management, communication/interpersonal skills, decision making, problem solving, lifelong learning skills, identifying customer problems and attitudes, call center protocol and interviewing skills. ITCA participants gain applied knowledge of hardware, operating systems, security, audio/visual, networking, help desk operations, web browsers and security software, Microsoft Office, troubleshooting, job search & employment skills in preparation to obtain their A+ Certification.
Next IT Career Academy begins in Spring 2018.
Required for admission: Completion of the 6 week Customer Support Academy, the 4-7 week Foundations Work Readiness Academy, and completing the requirements for the National Work Readiness Credential certification.

Learn foundational skills for careers in the construction and utilities industries, including over 90 hours of hand-on training on a real construction site. Foundations for the Trades is a 7 week apprenticeship readiness program designed to help you learn important industry skills and concepts and have a chance to apply new skills during a hands-on experience. The program consists of training in blueprint reading, using hand and power tools on a work site, and construction math and measuring. By obtaining certifications like OSHA 10, National Flagging, First Aid/CPR and fall arrest through the class, you are prepared for the apprenticeship exam. Participants who graduate start in positions paying $18/hr and up!
The Healthcare Administration Training Program prepares people for work in a healthcare administrative role in seven weeks, such as medical reception, scheduling, admissions, billing representatives, health information management, and health unit coordinators. During this training participants learn how to provide a high a level of customer service to patients, insurance concepts, medical terminology, EPIC systems, keyboarding, typing and many other skills. After seven weeks of classroom training, participants will be connected with a two week internship, followed by job opportunities. Positions in this field range from $14 – $21/hr.
Learn how to get into and grow your career in the insurance industry! You will earn a nationally recognized certification to show future employers. Topics covered include: understanding insurance, insurers and their regulations, insurer financial performance, marketing, underwriting and ratemaking, claims, risk management, loss exposure and insurance policies. All books and materials are provided at no cost. A multiple choice national exam of 85 questions is divided in 3 parts throughout the class, a pre-requisite for certification. The class meets one night a week for 16 weeks.
