President and General Counsel
Jim Gallegos joined Alliant Energy in 2010 as its Vice President and
General Counsel. Prior to Alliant, Gallegos served as Vice President
and Corporate General Counsel for Burlington Northern and Santa Fe
Corporation, and was responsible for corporate compliance and
transactions, financings, public disclosure, and governance and board
Gallegos started his career with Burlington Northern as a market
analyst after graduating from the University of Colorado with a
bachelor’s degree in business in 1983. After graduating from the
University of Minnesota School of Law in 1990, Gallegos clerked for
U.S. Federal District Court Judge Richard Bilby in Tucson, Arizona. In
1991, he joined the U.S. Department of Justice as a trial lawyer in the
criminal section of the Civil Rights Division. He tried cases before
federal juries and grand juries throughout the country.
In 1995, Gallegos left Washington D.C. for Denver to join US WEST Inc.
as a senior attorney, responsible for regulatory and legislative
activities in Colorado and New Mexico. He was promoted to director of
public policy in 1997, and after the company merged with Qwest in 2000,
he was named associate general counsel. In 2002, he was promoted to
serve as Quest's vice president of legal affairs.
Hispanic Business magazine selected Gallegos as one of its "2009
Corporate Elite," made up of 25 top executives who maintained their
professional leadership throughout the nation's financial crisis. The
