The Urban League, Urban League Guild, Umjoa Magazine, Newbridge Nonprofit, and American Player Theatre (APT) are proud co-partners in bringing you the powerful production of A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry on Thursday, August 11th at APT’s outdoor Hill Theatre.
A Raisin in the Sun is an award-winning theatrical masterpiece that broke down racial barriers on and off the stage and changed theatre forever. It is the first Broadway play written by an African-American woman and is considered an essential American play.
The play follows the three-generation Younger family as they grapple with different definitions of the American dream and how to achieve it. When the matriarch, Lena, buys a home in an all-white neighborhood, the Youngers are greeted by thinly veiled racism and financial pitfalls that threaten to pull the family apart and push their dreams out of reach. Their story encapsulates what it means to be oppressed, before birth and beyond death, constantly pushing against the world and each other. And through it all, knowing there’s always something to hope for. Always something to love. The play is an exquisite work of art and a compellingly powerful story.
