Accelerated Career Academies

The Urban League offers a variety of accelerated career academies focused on in-demand industries and occupations. In addition to classroom instruction, some academies include internships and hands-on training opportunities. Participants are connected with preferred employer partners and are often quickly hired into good-paying positions. All academies are free to participants.?

Exact Sciences Academy

Train for great jobs with one of Madison’s fastest growing employers. Training will help prepare you for a variety of roles with Exact Sciences including laboratory processing and customer care positions. Most positions begin at $15 or more per hour plus benefits and great advancement opportunity. Skills learned will include:

START (Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Readiness Training)

Start your career in construction! Prepare for 19 different trades, including carpentry, electrical, painting, and more. START provides 6 weeks of apprenticeship preparation in the areas of work readiness and preparation for apprenticeship entrance exams. You will receive job coaching and tutoring to make you a strong candidate for jobs in the construction industry.

Foundations for the Trades

Learn foundational skills for careers in the construction industry, including nearly 100 hours of hand-on training on a real construction site. Participants who graduate typically start in positions paying $15/hr and up! Graduates will earn industry recognized certifications including:

  • OSHA 10
  • National Flagging
  • First Aid/CPR
  • PACT Modules I – IV
  • Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Pre-Apprenticeship certification

CLASS (CLassroom Academy for Student Supports) Education Academy

This academy prepares job seekers for para-educator positions in the K-12 classroom such as a Educational Assistants. These positions can be a pathway to certification that aligns with the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) guidelines with the school districts of the greater Madison area. Skills learned will include:

  • Classroom management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Assessment
  • Lesson planning (age/grade appropriate)
  • Phonics
  • Environmental education
  • DPI mandated reporting

IT Career Academy (ITCA)

Members complete up to 11 months of work experience at an IT Help Desk or Field Service unit and complete the 2 semester Madison College CompTIA+ Certification Program while receiving career counseling, coaching, resource assistance, and post-employment success follow up. During this academy, participants gain knowledge of teamwork, accountability, time management, conflict management, communication/interpersonal skills, decision making, problem solving, lifelong learning skills, identifying customer problems and attitudes, call center protocol and interviewing skills. ITCA participants gain applied knowledge of hardware, operating systems, security, audio/visual, networking, help desk operations, web browsers and security software, Microsoft Office, troubleshooting, job search & employment skills in preparation to obtain their A+ Certification.
