Home Ownership Program

Home ownership has proven to be one of the most reliable means of economic self-sufficiency for American families. In 2019, the median homeowner had 40 times the household wealth compared to that of a renter [Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, 2019]. Urban League has expanded its unique model of home ownership to include 16 additional homes for sale now. The Program combines low interest loans, down payment assistance and wraparound supportive services to ensure families’ success on their journey towards financial independence.

Since 2001, Urban League’s award-winning Single Family Home Ownership Program has helped low-income families achieve ambitious goals through home ownership. Homes for sale through the Program are rehabbed, appraised, inspected and offered for sale to qualifying applicants through a highly transparent process. Eligibility is based on (1) the availability of a home to meet the stated housing requirements of applicants and, (2) an income verification process to meet tax credit guidelines.

Please see a few example images from actual homes for sale in the program below. In addition to the benefits noted above, each home has received a special tax assessment from the City of Madison to further assists with the cost of ownership. This, first, reduces then freezes buyer’s property taxes for the duration of their loan.

Please note, applicants who do not qualify at this time are encouraged to enroll in trainings and credit counseling services offered through the Urban League and will be considered for future housing opportunities.
