Financial Empowerment & Homeownership

Welcome to our Financial Empowerment and Homeownership page! The Urban League of Greater Madison is dedicated to empowering our community through comprehensive financial and homebuyer education. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge, resources, and support you need to make informed decisions about housing and finances.

OUR HISTORY

The Urban League of Greater Madison has operated several innovative and award-winning homeownership programs over the years. In 2018, we received national recognition from the Mutual of America Community Partnership Award for our innovative Lease-to-Purchase program which was one of the first programs in the country to use the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program for homeownership, rather than rental properties. More recently, in 2020 we broke new ground again with an innovative Homeownership & Wealth Building Program using federal New Market Tax Credits. Since it’s inception, our financial empowerment and homeownership programs have acquired, renovated, and sold 78 single family homes to low and moderate income first-time home buyers. While in the program, these families earned over $3,000,000 in equity while also increasing their income and savings through the stable housing offered through homeownership.
